Digital Twins Visual Communication.

Pioneering the future of climate science.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), as part of the European Destination Earth initiative, is advancing the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin. A digital twin is a detailed virtual replica of a physical system, process, or object that integrates real-world data and simulations. In climate science, it creates a dynamic, interactive model of the Earth, enabling users to explore scenarios, predict outcomes, and test solutions for adaptation and mitigation with unparalleled accuracy and interactivity.

Leading the change in climate impact modeling with interactive, easy-to-access visualizations.

Digital Twins Visual Communication.

Transforming our understanding of climate dynamics.

The Climate Adaptation Digital Twin is an initiative by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) that uses next-generation climate models to deliver high-resolution, interactive simulations addressing real-world climate challenges.

To support the communication of this work, Vizzuality developed the Digital Twins Visual Communication website: a dedicated site designed to make complex climate data accessible and engaging for a wide audience.

By showcasing practical use cases such as renewable energy planning in the Iberian Peninsula, the website helps users - ranging from the general public to policymakers and energy planners - understand how advanced climate data can inform decisions on issues like wind farm placement, urban heat adaptation, and more.

The result is a powerful tool that encourages informed action and connects research with real-world impact.

High-resolution climate insights.

Advanced simulations to provide detailed, high-resolution climate data, and a clearer understanding of climate patterns.

Scenario exploration.

It enables users to model and test "what-if" scenarios, empowering policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to plan effective climate adaptation strategies.

User-centered design.

Designed with an intuitive interface, the website ensures that complex climate data is accessible and actionable.

Developing the Digital Twin Visual Communication website.

The brief.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), Spain’s national hub for high-performance computing, supports both scientific and industrial research with state-of-the-art computational resources. They approached us to create a website that would showcase how advanced climate data can strengthen society’s resilience to climate change.

The goal was to clearly communicate the work behind the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin project - emphasizing its innovative approach and anticipated social impact - while also meeting the challenge of making complex scientific concepts accessible to a broad audience through engaging, user-friendly visualizations.

Our role.

Vizzuality played a pivotal role in designing and developing the website to showcase the progress of the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin platform.

Working closely with the BSC team, we translated complex climate model data into engaging, interactive visualizations. This required not only a deep understanding of the science behind the data, but also a focus on clearly conveying how the Climate Model Digital Twin works, its practical applications, and its value to the general public.

Our goal was to build an intuitive, informative website that enables users (researchers, policymakers, private companies, and a wide range of stakeholders) to explore climate scenarios, assess risks, and make more informed decisions around climate adaptation and mitigation.

Our process involved iterative prototyping and design refinement to ensure clarity, accessibility, and accurate representation of BSC’s sophisticated simulations.

By incorporating interactive elements and data storytelling, we made it possible for users to visualize how the Digital Twins can help us understand the impact of various climate change scenarios, ensuring the website could effectively communicate both the urgency and potential solutions to climate-related challenges.

Delivered with impact.

Making climate science intuitive.

The Digital Twins Visual Communication project was both ambitious and technically demanding, requiring the translation of complex, high-resolution climate data into an accessible and impactful digital experience. One of the main challenges was making advanced simulations and long-term climate projections understandable to a broad audience.

We added value by prioritizing user-centered design and crafting intuitive visualizations that distilled complexity while preserving scientific accuracy. This approach ensured that the website remained both engaging and credible, bridging the gap between cutting-edge climate science and public understanding.

  • Designed an intuitive, data-driven website that demonstrates how real-time climate scenario analysis supports decision-making in practice.
  • Translated complex climate data into clear, interactive visual narratives to enhance understanding and engagement.
  • Helped the BSC bridge cutting-edge research with practical, actionable insights for stakeholders in climate adaptation.
